(Matthew 18:3) I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent. (Job 9:28) Innocent: 1. free from moral wrong; without sin; pure: innocent children. 2. free from legal or specific wrong; guiltless: innocent of the crime. (Dictionary) When I read these words of Jesus, I wonder if there are any who can enter the kingdom of heaven. Most of us believe that we can never reach perfection, that it is impossible to be Christ-like, so if we remain in our guilt, can we ever enter the kingdom of heaven? When I think of being like a child, I think of the innocence and the absence of fear in little children. They are awestruck by life and curious to find new adventure, whether it be in a flower, a bug, or a blade of grass. They are innocent. They have not committed any crime, and they look at the world in wonder. They have no fear until they are taught fear. Job had been taught fear, in this passage. He had experienced great sorrow, and feared being guilty. Religion has taught us to fear. We are afraid of hell and sin, and we label ourselves guilty. We know Jesus came to take away our guilt, yet most of us live in fear every moment. What if fear were only a perception. Fear has no hold on us except in how we perceive a matter. There are those we call daredevils who do not fear what others might perceive as fearful situations. Fear is only a thought that has become a belief. We believe something is dangerous, so we fear it, because we fear being harmed. Children do not fear because they do not have past experiences to tell them there is danger. Jesus admonishes us to become as little children. I perceive that to mean to become innocent and free from fear of danger. Fear is a limiting belief that keeps us from experiencing the reality of what is happening right now. If you are afraid of heights, you may never experience seeing the beauty of the earth from an airplane. If you are afraid of birds or bugs, you may be unable to go outside and therefore you miss the experience of seeing God’s creation, or experience the sun on your face. How many experiences have you missed because you were taught to be afraid? When we learn that Jesus did not come to sentence us to hell, but to free us to experience life to the fullest, we can become as children once again, and begin to experience all of life. When you come right down to it, when you have no fear of death, you are free from death. If you are not afraid of dying, you can laugh, you can have joy and you can enjoy the Life that God gave you. If you die, you can begin another experience of wonder, in the presence of God. We cannot experience sadness and joy at the same time. Choose joy. We cannot experience light and darkness at the same time. Choose Light. We cannot experience fear and wonder at the same time, so which will you choose? |
