A Better Idea?
by Mary Justene Martin
January 17, 2012

Then God spoke to Samuel: "I'm sorry I ever made Saul king. He's
turned his back on me. He refuses to do what I tell him."
Samuel was angry when he heard this. He prayed his anger and
disappointment all through the night. He got up early in the
morning to confront Saul but was told, "Saul's gone. He went to
Carmel to set up a victory monument in his own honor, and then
was headed for Gilgal." (1 Samuel 15: 10-12)

The books of Samuel depict life as we know it today. We
find God, we promise to serve Him, He begins to lead us into
victory but then suddenly we get a better idea. We get a swelled
head believing we have accomplished the will of God in our own
strength, and everything starts going south. Most of us would
chastise Saul for not listening to God and simply saving out the
choice loot from the Amalekites. After all, hadn't he worked hard
for God? Didn't he deserve a little reward for His labor? And if
that were not enough, he was now setting up a monument in his
own honor? Are we not just like Saul? We begin to reason that
we know God would want to bless us, and even start patting
ourselves on the back for all our “good work”. We see the
Israelites doing this time and again throughout the old
testament. God helping them out of peril and them walking right
back in.

We would all be in the same mess as Saul had it not been
for Jesus. Thank God, He paid the price for our foolish
selfishness. Our “better ideas” would only lead to our own
demise had Jesus not paid for our sins. It is not until we finally
realize that Jesus did more than blot out our sins, but He gave
us His own mind to begin to think like He thought, thereby
finally making better decisions. When we continue to think with
our own fleshly mind, we will always make the wrong decisions.
Thank God we have the mind of Christ to change our old self
into a new creature. Those who follow Jesus, little by little
become like Him. Just as we take on the natural characteristics
of those we spend time with, we can take on the characteristics
of our Lord, by spending our time with Him. Reading His word
with a new fervor, when we realize He is speaking to us and not
simply reading a book of history and fables, we become more
and more like Him. He IS the word, and there is no other way to
get to God except through His word. And no other way to be
changed into a new man.
