A New Life
by Mary Justene Martin

I'll make you a great nation
and bless you.
I'll make you famous;
you'll be a blessing.
I'll bless those who bless you;
those who curse you I'll curse.
All the families of the Earth
will be blessed through you." (Genesis 12: 2,3)
The ground was hardly dry after the flood of Noah's day, when
his sons began to think for themselves once again. Sin lurked at
the door and man's life span began to diminish. Where once
they lived for over 900 years they were now living just over two
hundred.
Once again, God needed someone faithful to carry out His will
for His creation. He chose Abram, the son of Terah. He sent
Abram out, away from his past and those who were becoming
more and more corrupt, and promised him a whole nation of his
own.
We think how lucky Abram was that God chose him, but we
rarely consider the sacrifice it must have taken for Abram to
drop his identity (his past) and walk into the unknown. Many
today are afraid to make such sacrifice, even though God
promised Abram that all the families of the earth will be blessed
through him. We fail to realize that we are those people who are
blessed because of Abram. We also fail to realize that God
changed Abram into another person. Because of his obedience
God renamed him Abraham, and Abram (the former man)was
never mentioned again.
As we follow the story, we see that Abram was no different than
us. He made mistakes, and wrong decisions concerning Sarai
his wife, yet God still kept his promise. Abraham was indeed
blessed, him and his descendants. God has promised these
blessings to go on to all of His own children, those who choose
to carry out His will on the earth. Because Abraham believed
God, we are still blessed by God.
God has never forced any of us to choose Him. He has always
given us a choice, a decision to make. But He does tell us which
choice will keep us as heirs of this promise. Even though we are
still making foolish mistakes, the one huge mistake is to choose
against Life, the Life of God.
The old testament is there as a reminder that God knows we will
take the wrong paths but then it shows us the results of making
wrong or right decisions. We can even choose to believe there
is no God, but of course then we have to put our trust in our own
decisions, which have failed us time and again. At times I get
disgusted with myself for not moving faster into the things of
God, but God....Oh yes, God won't give up on us, even when we
give up on ourselves, as long as we continue to seek for His will
for us. We are a little surprised when we find out it was never
just about us. That all along, those blessings had a much bigger
purpose than our selfish desires. God did not give Sarah a son
just because she was barren and wanted to have a baby.
Through Isaac, we are still receiving God's purpose for His
creation. All of it, not just me or you.
