Affliction
by Mary Justene Martin
January 28, 2012
Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth
him out of them all. (Psalm 34:19)
Affliction: experience of evil, suffering, distress, affliction,
perseverance. (Strong's Concordance)
As long as you live no evil will stick to you.
If anyone stands in your way,
if anyone tries to get you out of the way,
Know this: Your God-honored life is tightly bound
in the bundle of God-protected life;
But the lives of your enemies will be hurled aside
as a stone is thrown from a sling. (1 Samuel 25:28,29)
As we continue reading in 1 Samuel we find David suffering
many afflictions from the hand of Saul. But not only from Saul.
Here we find David asking for rations for his men from a man he
had helped, only to be insulted. David became angry and would
have killed this man had God not used the man's wife to deliver
him from the consequences of this action. Today, many of us
think we are suffering for righteousness sake, even though we
know we have caused many of the afflictions ourselves. David's
own anger was about to get him into trouble but God delivered
him from this self-imposed affliction, the same as he delivered
him from the hand of Saul. God used this man's wife to remind
David who he was. I find it interesting that this woman, Abigail,
was able to see prophetically into David's life. God not only
saved David, but He also saved this woman who later became
David's wife.
God is always on the side of the righteous. There is no doubt
that David was human in wanting to avenge himself, but he
repented and later went to Saul to prove his faithfulness to
God's chosen. Perhaps it was in part because of his covenant
with Johnathon, Saul's son, but also because David refused to
go against God's anointed. Sometimes we feel justified in
reacting to these evil acts and words that have been used
against us. However, God looks at our motives and delivers us
from the affects of our foolish reactions. Fortunately, we have a
deliverer, Christ Jesus, who protects us from our own evil
desires if we will only stop and listen for the leading of the Holy
Spirit.
We find when David passed this sort of test, he was rewarded
with a wife. In this case a beautiful and faithful woman who
would honor him. In our case, we are rewarded by becoming the
bride of Christ. I think this sounds like a much better deal.
