Beautiful
by Mary Justene Martin
January 21, 2012
You are altogether beautiful my darling, and there is no blemish
in you. (Song of Solomon 4:8)
Beautiful: 1. Having beauty; delighting the senses or mind. 2.
Excellent of it’s kind; wonderful, remarkable (Dictionary)
The scriptures have many references to the word beautiful. God
has made everything beautiful, and lovely to look at, however
some of these descriptions refer to being goodly, pleasant and
well also. Some give the connotation of making yourself
beautiful. Our society puts a lot of importance on physical
beauty, and gives a very warped standard of what that should
be. Consequently, many women spend their lives, their money
and their time trying to look a certain way or like a certain
standard, when God calls His creation beautiful. He looks upon
His bride, the one who has made herself ready, as the "Most
beautiful among women". A woman of beauty, is a woman who
has an inner confidence of who her God is and her relationship
to Him. She makes herself goodly, pleasant and well, so that she
can radiate the likeness of her God. We have all seen articles
about beautiful models, or celebrities who do not act in a very
beautiful manner. We even see that these are not satisfied with
how they look and are always seeking beauty methods or
surgery to become more beautiful.
Webster defines beautiful as "delighting the senses or mind.
Excellent, remarkable."
There is not a person on the planet who cannot achieve beauty
of one kind or another. Regardless of how society views us, we
can always strive to be pleasant, and goodly. A woman of grace
exudes beauty in the way she carries herself, the way she
speaks, the way she smiles. We have all seen beautiful people
who really had no remarkable characteristics of physical beauty
at all. These are God’s beautiful people. They seem to be
ageless, and they attract the honor and admiration of all who
come into their presence. When we come into the presence of
God, this is why we can exclaim, "You are altogether beautiful!",
even though we cannot even see Him. It is because of His
Majestic attraction. We cannot help but be consumed by His
remarkable excellence. He has made Himself beautiful.
As women of God, I believe it is time we stopped trying to make
ourselves merely look good but seek to acquire these magnetic
attributes of excellence and grace.
