Decision
by Mary Justene Martin
February 4, 2012
Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one
of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his
hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”
(Genesis 3:22)
It occurs to me that sin is not what we think it is. Sin is not the
absence of morality. Sin is a decision. Adam and Eve made the
decision to think for themselves, instead of obeying God. Isn't
that how we get ourselves into trouble? Think about it. In this
passage, God is declaring that man could eat from the tree of
Life and live forever. But since he made that bad decision to eat
from the tree of knowledge, he was doomed.
So all this time we were trying to live morally, to keep from
sinning, we were still making the wrong decision. Man was
indeed doomed on the day he made that wrong decision, but
God....(Oh I love those two words, “but God...”). But God made a
way for man to be restored to God's original plan, by offering
Himself (Jesus) as payment for Adam's (and our own) wrong
decisions.
So what did that restoration recover? Man's ability to go back
and obey God, and once again live forever as he was intended
in the first place. How do I know this? Because we have
established that all of creation was (and is) tiny little molecules
of God Himself. God was and is and is to come. God is forever!
And we, as tiny pieces of God, are intended to be as He is...
forever! God had to put a stop to our immortality because our
wrong decisions would have caused us to destroy all of His
creation. Though it looks as if we have almost accomplished
this...but God....Oh yes! He made the way to restore us. Of
course, we will not be able to walk in this until we become
convinced that we cannot make decisions apart from God.
Each time we make a decision against God, we are making it
against ourselves. Counter-productive wouldn't you agree?
Being our own god is a major bad decision. But the fact still
remains, we were created to live forever. At this point we are
still selfishly making our own bad decisions, and people are
dying all over the place. Wouldn't it be better to dwell together
in peace and harmony with God....forever?
I am not asking you to believe me. I am challenging you to
search the scriptures for yourself. God tells us to study to show
ourselves approved. You will find all over His word where man
was intended to live eternally. Try John 3:16 for starters.
No, I'm not asking you to believe the writings of a crazy old
woman, but it would be a bad decision not to believe God. Ya
think???
