Deliverance from Shame
by Mary Justene Martin
May 10, 2012
An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who causes shame
is like rottenness to his bones. (Proverbs 12:4)
Shame: The painful feeling of having done or experienced something
dishonorable, improper, or foolish. A cause for regret, disappointment.
Everyone has done or experienced shame. As children we were told
"shame on you" for varying degrees of misbehavior. These are
convictions that cause us to feel ashamed and to say I am sorry, and be
forgiven. However, there is a shame-based nature that causes certain
ones to feel that they ARE a shame. That they cannot be anything but
shame. They suffer self-inflicted punishment because they feel they will
never be worthy of forgiveness. These are people you meet on the street,
who go about with their head down, never looking you in the eye and
carrying the burden of shame and depression with them like an iron chain
wrapped around their neck. Every day is a challenge to walk through. As a
young woman I attended a meeting where the speaker called for
deliverance for those who were burdened with this awful shame. I
remember the deep awful pain of what seemed to be God extracting this
terrible root from deep within the core of my being. I remember the
freedom and joy I experienced as God showed me what I had never been
able to see before.
Sin always carries with it a burden of shame. Each time we miss the mark,
we feel ashamed. But if we carry this shame with us, it only serves to keep
us more and more burdened until finally the enemy has done what he set
out to do. We have become the shame instead of just the carrier of it. The
old adage "The straw that broke the camel’s back." comes to mind.
Human beings are not beasts of burden. We are not designed to carry
great loads on our back. Shame is a burden that we were never required to
carry. This is a work of the devil. For this purpose was the Son of God
manifested, to destroy the works of the devil. (1John 3:8)
This is a dangerous burden to carry with us. When Jesus destroys
something it must stay destroyed. Jesus never destroys a person, He
came to bring life and freedom, abundant life. But He came to destroy the
work of the devil. The lamb of God takes away the sins of the world. If He
thought it was a necessary thing to destroy, we have no business carrying
the shame of it around on our necks any more. Shame is a cause of
depression and depression produces stress and eventual death. God has
given us a spirit of power and of love and a sound mind. A mind riddled
with shame is not a sound mind.
You may not even be aware that you are carrying around the shame of
past sins. God wants to expose this hidden killer and release you to
become the excellent bride He has been awaiting.
