Gathering
by Mary Justene Martin
February 3, 2012
God spoke: "Swarm, Ocean, with fish and all sea life!
Birds, fly through the sky over Earth!"
God created the huge whales,
all the swarm of life in the waters,
And every kind and species of flying birds.
God saw that it was good.
God blessed them: "Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Ocean!
Birds, reproduce on Earth!"
It was evening, it was morning—
Day Five. (Genesis 1:20-23 Message)
As I read the book of Genesis, I begin to imagine creation as a
Great Gathering. As God spoke to the molecules and elements
they began to spin and vibrate and miraculously take form. What
is mind boggling is He left nothing out. He made every form and
life all from the same substance, which was of course the
material He had at hand...Himself.
Each of these miniscule molecules of God became creation
itself, with a purpose and flavor of it's own, but still connecting
everything, gathering, so to speak, all of us together as one
great picture of God. Just like an artist's canvas and paints come
together to form whatever is in the mind of the artist, so we, tiny
little pieces of God, become gathered together in Him.
None of us were left out, each of us uniquely important to the
whole picture, but of course, we all know the picture became
marred and parts of it were no longer distinguishable. Darkness
hid part of the original beauty. But God.....Oh, what artist will not,
with the stroke of his brush, gather all the components together
again to make the picture right, perhaps even more beautiful
than it was in the beginning. I do not know what the new heaven
and the new earth will look like, because I am not concerned
with the things I see. But I am aware that the Great Artist is
correcting, and gathering all the components of His work of art
together. Forming us into a marvelous picture of beauty and
light.
As we allow God to move and switch our molecules around,
things may become a little uncomfortable, but just consider it as
a Great Gathering. God is restoring His beautiful creation and we
each have a distinct purpose but we are all one grand Picture of
God. Every molecule distinct, whether flower, feather, mountain
or sea. Nothing is left out. We are all part of God, Himself.
Without him we are without form and void, but he has gathered
us together for such a time as this!
The trees clap their hands, the rocks cry out and the angels cry
“Holy, Holy, Holy!” How could we not praise Him? How could we
not bow down before the One who has gathered together this
wonderful picture of God? Got a problem with bowing? Watch
out, your molecules are about to be rearranged!
