God Will Deliver
by Mary Justene Martin
January 16, 2011
Jonathan said to his armor bearer, "Come on now, let's go across
to these uncircumcised pagans. Maybe God will work for us.
There's no rule that says God can only deliver by using a big
army. No one can stop God from saving when he sets his mind to
it." (1 Samuel 14:6)
Saul's army was greatly outnumbered. Saul had thought to
take the Philistines in his own strength instead of seeking the
counsel of the Lord. He had no weapons and only a few soldiers.
Things were not looking good. Jonathon, Saul's son, took his
armor bearer to seek a sign from the Lord whether to come up
against the Philistines. By faith Jonathon and his armor bearer
attacked the camp of the Philistines and caused so much chaos
that they began to destroy each other. Because of Jonathon's
faith in God he was able to outwit the enemy. God is not
impressed with the size of our problems, but with the faith we
have in Him to keep His promises. We cannot assume that we
will be victorious, unless we have sought the Lord. This was the
difference between Jonathon and his father.
David was able to defeat the whole army of the Philistines,
one boy against a giant by his faith in his God to help him. God
has a plan for us, just as He had with David and Jonathon. Our
position is to stay in close counsel with Him by prayer and
reading His word. We cannot do these things without Him, but
with Him all things are possible.
Reading the scriptures and allowing God to remind us who
is in control of our battles, our faith is increased and we become
as Jonathon. No amount of simply going to church and listening
to another speak can equal the power of a single word from
God. We are never to go to church for our information, but for
confirmation of what God is already speaking to us by His Holy
Spirit. When God has confirmed His word, it is time to strike.
Jonathon received his confirmation and immediately set out to
conquer his enemy. God was with him. God is with us in this
time of trial, but He expects us to strike when the time is before
us.
