Idols

Now the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it from
Ebenezer to Ashdod. Then the Philistines took the ark of God and
brought it to the house of Dagon and set it by Dagon. When the
Ashdodites arose early the next morning, behold, Dagon had
fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD. So
they took Dagon and set him in his place again. But when they
arose early the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen on his
face to the ground before the ark of the LORD. And the head of
Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off on the
threshold; only the trunk of Dagon was left to him. (1 Samuel
5:1-4 NASB)

You may wonder what this story of an ancient idol has to do
with our lives today. We certainly don't worship idols. Or do we?
The mistake these Philistines were making was trying to get the
power of God to work for them while placing His ark alongside
their own god Dagon. Dagon was no match for God and he kept
toppling over. We are a society of idol worshipers. We seek after
riches, power, and stuff. But most importantly we try to get God
to bless these idols.

For instance, in just a few days we will be once again faced
with the dilemma of watching the Super bowl or going to church.
The Super Bowl is an idol to many. They look forward to all the
hoopla and excitement of one football game. It has become
such an idol that some churches even bring a television into
their sanctuary so that they may watch the game, in the hope of
keeping their Super Bowl worshipers in church. This is certainly
comparative to bringing the ark into the house of Dagon.

It is obvious that Chaos ensued. The people were plagued
with tumors and were so severely ravaged that they couldn't get
rid of the Ark of God quick enough.

How often do our own idols speak to us? We give place to
them preferring them above God. Then we wonder why our
lives are so plagued with misfortune. I'd say cancer and it's
tumors could be compared with these people's tumors. Yet we
never seem to make the connection. We refuse to acknowledge
that we have given God a lesser priority than our own selfish
desires, whether it be a vacation, or a movie, or even a family
reunion.

God is a holy God, and will not take second place. The
results of our disrespect is yet to be manifested, but it is certain
we will see them. God is always willing to forgive us of our
foolishness, but we must acknowledge it and repent first.

Think about it. Is your idol really worth offending God? We
too will see these idols topple and fall to pieces. There will
probably be weeping and gnashing of teeth when this happens.
