Light
by Mary Justene Martin
February 2, 2012
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The
earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face
of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of
the waters.
Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God
saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the
darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called
Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.
(Genesis 1:1-5)
Let's take our new born minds which we imagined yesterday,
and begin again to search the mind of God to see what He
intended us to see from the beginning of Light. If you have
never read the bible with a heart to understand what God is
saying, then you are operating on what you have been taught
from man. If there had been no man to teach you, you would
have to ask God to open your understanding. Much like an
adopted person decides to find their true identity by finding
their birth parents, they must go on a journey of searching. Now
that we are adults, we are able to see for ourselves from the
Holy Spirit of the Creator, just what it is that they (the Godhead)
had in mind for their creation. There is no frame of reference.
Remember, the work of redemption is already finished, so
trying to form someone else out of ourselves is impossible.
Only God knows who we really are, and we are not just
individuals, we are all connected by this Light that had to come
before anything else.
Just as we have to turn on the light in a dark room before we
can do anything in that room, God turned on the light and shone
it upon what He intended to make. Before there was light, there
was nothing to see. God's Spirit was hovering, or waiting for the
image to appear so that He could bring form to it. Until there is
light in our lives, or until we see the image God has in mind for
His creation, we are without form; and void. In other words, we
have nothing to live for, because we cannot see what God sees.
God turned on the Light and said “It is good.” So God was
pleased with what He created. The first thing we need for
survival is Light. Jesus is the Light of the world. Without Him we
are still in darkness. Wasted, and purposeless, we have no real
life, we were there in that formless void before Light came. But
Jesus flipped the switch and everything began to take it's place.
In my favorite scripture, Isaiah 60, he tells us that deep darkness
was upon the people:
For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth,
And deep darkness the people;
But the Lord will arise over you,
And His glory will be seen upon you.
The Gentiles shall come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising. (Isaiah 60:2,3)
This shows me that darkness has once again covered the earth
and deep darkness is on the people. But God.... God is arising in
those whose light has been turned on, and these darkened
people will come to the Light. Remember, the work Jesus did on
the cross is finished. It is a done deal. His glory will be seen
upon those who have come to turn on the switch. The Light is
there. It has always been there since day one. Will you be one
who will recognize the Light when someone comes to turn on
the switch? Or are you one who will turn the light on for
someone else? Whichever you are, get ready, for God is about
to turn up the Light!
