Living Large
by Mary Justene Martin
January 24, 2012

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis
1:1)

I am of the mind that God spoke everything into existence. With
His words He spoke and everything was, and He declared it
good. For every created thing He made a space for it to dwell or
fill. When He created light, He filled every empty space and
declared it was good. He made space for the waters to fill and
declared it good. When God made man, He made a space for
them to dwell, and gave them meaningful work to do. Their
whole life was to fill the earth and take care of it. Then He
walked with them and talked with them. What do you suppose
they talked about? What do you talk about when you have
accomplished everything you enjoyed doing all day? If you are
like me, you say in essence "It is good!"

Life is good. But life is only really good when we fill our space to
capacity, when we spill over with life and we can look at life and
say "Wow God! What a life you gave me!" That is called
gratitude. People are always talking about gratitude, but in our
society we have forgotten what good is. We forget to thank God
constantly for allowing us to fill our space with good things.
Instead, we hear complaining all the time. People never
satisfied with the life they have, always grumbling they haven’t
enough. Life is life and there is always enough if you are truly
filling your space. When you are running over, you will fill
someone else’s life and they too will begin to declare "It is
good." Wouldn’t it be nice at the end of the day to go for a walk
with God and tell Him how good it was to fill your space and live
large today.

Yesterday, I may have failed to fill my space with life. Instead I
filled it with loneliness. I complained that I had no one to talk to
and God just waited to hear my report about the end of my day. I
never showed up. I could have gone out and found someone
else who wanted to have someone to talk to and filled my space
by spilling my life into theirs. I wasted precious seconds of life
and actually took someone else’s by complaining to them.

Today I have 86.400 seconds, tiny little spaces for me to fill with
life. I can fill each of them and talk tonight with God and see if
He is pleased with them. Each one of them is a gift from the
Creator Himself. If I waste them I have nothing to show my
gratitude. Actually, gratitude is all I have to give back to Him.
Thank you for giving me some of your precious seconds by
reading this. It was filling my life with joy, and I hope some of it
spilled over into yours.
