Save Us...Again!
by Mary Justene Martin
January 15, 2012
Then all the people begged Samuel, "Pray to your God for us,
your servants. Pray that we won't die! On top of all our other sins,
we've piled on one more—asking for a king!" (1 Samuel 12:19)
Ever since Eden, man has consistently “passed the buck”
insisting on making someone else responsible for their own
spiritual walk. These people asked for a king to lead them and
God gave them one. Now they realized that this also was a big
mistake. They already had a King in God. Humanity has not
changed much. Today we place our focus on electing a leader to
lead us out of the messes we get ourselves into. This way we
have someone to blame for our own foolishness. When this new
leader seems to fail, we scramble to get yet another, thinking
this will somehow be different.
When we finally realize that only God can help us, we call
out again. “Save us O God!” then God sends a prophet to help
His people and once again we are safe. But it seems we never
learn. As soon as the danger seems to be over, we once again
go back to our folly. When will we ever wake up?
One would think after centuries of repeating this same
foolishness, and after witnessing all the chaos and ruined lives,
we would finally see God as the patient, loving King He has
always been. God has promised that He will have His people
and they will have HIM as King, so it WILL happen. The question
is, when will someone step up and decide to make him their
king?
We are embarking on yet another election. People will
campaign, make promises only God could keep, and the people
will love to listen, believing that a man can lead them. Whether
they will be a good leader, or a bad leader, they will still be
mortal, and capable of mortal mistakes. Only God can truly keep
His promises. Will His people still insist on a king to lead them?
We already have a King, His name is Jesus. He has His word to
lead us. We cannot listen to it through the mind of man and
make sense of it, it must come through the Holy Spirit of God.
I challenge you to listen to these campaign promises and
compare them with the Word of God. If they line up with HIS
word, they may be worth listening to. However, even Saul who
seemed to be an anointed king, began to listen to his own mind
and to other men and great was his fall.
God has always sent a prophet among his people to
confirm His Word. Pray for one who would serve God, as
Samuel did. One who sees the value in the position God has
given him or her.
