Study To Show Thyself Approved
by Mary Justene Martin
January 2, 2012

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not
need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2Timothy 2:15
NKJV)

A word to the wise from Paul the Apostle. Paul is instructing young
Timothy how to be a warrior for Christ:

No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life,
that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. (verse 4)

This spiritual war is much like the natural wars we have been fighting.
Most of us are content to let the young warriors do all the fighting, while
we stay home and become more and more entangled with the affairs of
this life. We only know what we are being told, and we do not even know
the source of most of our information.

You may believe that you are exempt from this battle because you are
old, or female, or poor, or too busy, or sick and on and on and on.
However, in this battle it is every man/woman for themselves. Paul was
telling Timothy to study, because that is how he, himself survived. He
studied God's word until he knew the nature and character of God.
Because he did this, he knew he was fighting for a real cause, and not just
something made up by man.

Most of us have created a god in our own image. We choose to
believe God thinks like we think, and carries on the business of running
the universe as we would. I dare say, our universe would have been
destroyed eons ago, had I been in charge.

We must be teachable. It will do no good to study if our mind is
already made up. Most people's minds are already made up about God.
They will argue their viewpoint whether it is in the bible or not. The only
way they can come to the knowledge of truth is to study for themselves
using God's word as their source for proof.

A very dear friend of mind recently changed denominations and was
telling me about reading a bible I had never heard of. Upon searching it
out, I found it to be one that was translated by this new denomination.
Now there are many translations out there but I am leery of one that is
translated by one sect. This is why it is important to study. There are study
bibles which compare their texts with the original Greek and Hebrew
writings. This is the only way we can be sure if what we are reading is
actually from the original word of God.

The Word of God is the weapon of our warfare. If we know what it is
we fight for, we must have the proper weapons. I am afraid the enemy has
preached the word of God dry through the mouths of men. The only way
we can be sure is to study for ourselves. It is not enough to have heard the
words once. Faith comes by hearing and hearing (studying and hearing
God's voice).

It is the new year. There is no better time to start than now, to prove to
ourselves that God is a worthy King, and that His approval is all we really
need. Isn't it time we showed ourselves approved?
