The Best Is Now
by Mary Justene Martin
February 11, 2012
Yes, I've settled on him as the one to train his children and future
family to observe God's way of life, live kindly and generously
and fairly, so that God can complete in Abraham what he
promised him." (Genesis 18:19 Msg)
There is an old song entitled, “The Best Is Yet To Come”. Indeed
we have been trained by society to look forward to a better
future. However, looking forward keeps us from seeing what is
before us right now. We look at our children and envision
wealth, health and a wonderful future, but the problem we face
is this: Are we preparing them right now to be diligent, God-
respecting individuals, with a knowledge that without God they
have no hope for a future? Oh yes, they may acquire some
wealth and an education, but will they be prepared for life in a
Godless society? Acquiring wealth is easy compared to living
through tragedies and sicknesses that are curses caused by a
lack of understanding of what it means to be without God.
God gave Abraham a promise but it hinged on His being faithful
to raise up his children to observe God's way of life. The war
between a godless Ishmael and a faithful Isaac still rages today.
There are those who are after personal gain, who fear that the
world is running out of resources, and those who know that God
is the ultimate provider. If we raise our children to always be out
for personal gain and acquiring stuff, we will never receive the
promise of freedom, peace and all that God has promised to His
people.
Teaching our children to always be looking for a better
tomorrow, keeps them from enjoying the presence of God in
their lives right now. Religion has taught us we can never be
free until we die, which in turn keeps us scrambling for all we
can get before we die. We all know that what we acquire in life
will be worthless if we die. So actually all the real joy of life is
wasted looking forward to dying. When you get right down to it,
that makes no sense at all. We teach our children to scramble
for stuff, knowing full well it will be worthless sooner or later.
Teaching our children to know God will be an everlasting
lifestyle. One that will carry us on in the purpose and destiny
God prepared for us when He sent Jesus to save us.
You may be urging your child to get an expensive education
when they could have been taught much more effective life-
skills by Holy Spirit. He knows all there is to know about how to
live in this age and in the age to come. So I'll say it again, “The
best is right now!”
