What IS Faith?
by Mary Justene Martin
January 30, 2011
Faith means being sure of the things we hope for and knowing
that something is real even if we do not see it. Faith is the reason
we remember great people who lived in the past.
It is by faith we understand that the whole world was made by
God's command so what we see was made by something that
cannot be seen. (Hebrews 11:1-3 NCV)
We have all had these scriptures explained to us, but we scratch
our heads and think it is clear as mud. The fact is, without faith
you can not know what faith is. If you cannot see it, how can you
know it is even in existence? By faith. The truth is, it is very
important we know that if we have to see it to believe it, it is
NOT faith. Some people cannot wrap there natural minds around
this. But these same people will admit that things are not always
what they appear. There are optical illusions all around us. When
we go to the movies, what we see, we know is not true. When
we go to work, we believe we are going to receive a paycheck.
However, how do we know this to be true? We simply have to
go by faith.
The kingdom of God is a much more important issue than a
paycheck or a movie. The kingdom of God is our only hope of
eternal existence. If we believe in a big bang theory, that some
sort of explosion caused everything to come into existence,
why can't we believe in a creative God who makes all things to
last forever? I am not here to debate these things but to implant
yet another seed of faith in you.
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God
(Romans 10:17)
It is not just hearing someone preach but by proving that what is
being said is really from the word of God. Hearing and reading
again and again, is allowing that seed to grow and develop into
real faith. What the world is calling faith is usually mental ascent.
And we are all products of what our natural senses have heard,
and seen. Faith is believing in what we cannot see and knowing
that there is more than what we see. Just as a farmer lives by
faith that the seed he is planting will produce a crop, so our
belief in a God we have not seen will produce a kingdom where
life is eternal and bodies will never get sick or die. Just because
we have not yet seen it, that seed is there waiting to sprout.
Each time you read or hear God's word, it is another watering of
that seed.
