What's The Fighting All About?
by Mary Justene Martin
February 8, 2012

Abram said to Lot, "Let's not have fighting between us, between
your shepherds and my shepherds. After all, we're family. Look
around. Isn't there plenty of land out there? Let's separate. If you
go left, I'll go right; if you go right, I'll go left." (Genesis 13:8,9)

That's how they came to part company, uncle and nephew.
Abram settled in Canaan; Lot settled in the cities of the plain and
pitched his tent near Sodom. (Genesis 13:11,13)

God said to Abram, "Open your eyes, look around. Look north,
south, east, and west. Everything you see, the whole land spread
out before you, I will give to you and your children
forever. I'll
make your descendants like dust—counting your descendants
will be as impossible as counting the dust of the Earth. So—on
your feet, get moving! Walk through the country, its length and
breadth; I'm giving it all to you." (Genesis 13:14-17)

Here we see another wrong decision. Lot chose to live in the
city, close to the familiar. He chose to dwell where he could see
more of what he already had. But God promised Abram so much
more than he already had. He was promised not only riches, but
people and land and a future that would last eternally. His
descendants were to inherit everything,
forever! Think about it.
The land Lot chose eventually burned up. He literally lost
everything but Abraham is still inheriting all God's promises yet
today.

It appears that the only reason nations go to war is that they fail
to understand eternal provision. The enemy has duped them
into believing that somehow the earth will run out or come to an
end leaving us all destitute. So we go to war to try to keep
others from getting what is left. God's people, those who know
Him, always have and always will inherit His land. There is no
shortage. We are not running out of anything, regardless of what
science tells us. God promised a people and provision that out
numbered the dust of the earth. All we have to do to get it is
walk and believe, not take it from someone else. Abram was
rich but he was willing to give Lot whatever he chose because
he had experienced God's faithfulness.

Think about it. The only things we lose are those things we
destroy for ourselves. Our fear causes us to ruin the very things
we are fighting for. A nation that has been bombed and
plundered is no longer anything worth having. God has
promised us so much more than land and riches. We are
promised eternal life, a life of health and youth, peace, joy (all
the gifts of the Spirit) and all of these things to continue
eternally. Unending love, unending favor, never to run out! I'd
rather have that than a burned out shell of a nation the reeks
with the stench of dead flesh.

God is waiting for us to walk and take possession of these
promises. He has promised that we will dwell in a kingdom
unlike anything we have ever known. We can be just another
generation of fearful, greedy people who will be passed over for
yet another generation, or we can be the generation that finally
takes Him at His word to stand up and take His kingdom back for
Him (and themselves).
