Great Debate
July 7, 2004
Justene Martin

A great debate was starting,
the highbrows gathered there.
The high and mighty rulers,
held beliefs up to compare.

Said one, "I find the issues
of living too mundane.
Why drag out love and peace,
Why bring those up again?"

The other shouted "Money,
now that's the very core,
and how to get lots of it,
that's what I'm fighting for."

Still another "righteous" leader,
said, "religion, that's my game,
I make up silly doctrines,
forget the poor and lame."

Then quietly, a soldier said,
"Why must I go to war,
when clearly you don't even know
the things you're fighting for?"

At last a humble carpenter
took his place upon the stand,
a hush fell on the crowd
as He raised a nail-scarred hand,

"Indeed it's hard to understand
what issues come to show,
what silly things you fight about
when you don't even know,

That in the end what matters is
what matters in the end.
Did I forget what matters?
Or did I save my friend?"
