The Road Least Traveled
April 4, 2008
Justene Martin

Recently I read an essay recalling the country roads of days gone by. If you are old enough to remember
when the country roads were not yet graveled, you remember how difficult it was to make your way in the
spring of the year when the mud was up to the running boards. (Of course I’m not old enough to remember
that phrase, but I heard it somewhere). If you wanted to get anywhere you had to be pretty brave, and plow
right through without stopping or you would be completely buried in the mud. My dad seemed to relish the
challenge of burrowing through, proving his driving skills to our mom and us. However, when the sun came
out and the roads began to dry, great ruts would occur, and those who traveled them then were in danger of
becoming hopelessly stuck or damaging their car.

As we grew older, we became more fearful and chose safer more familiar roads, but somehow the
challenge of those earlier times seems to have been lost in our youth. Perhaps the super highways of today
have made it too easy to lose the adventure of traveling on to new adventures, forging our own path. Many
of us seem to think that because all the roads are graveled, that all the excitement of life has been explored.
Perhaps not, perhaps we should still go out and find a trail to blaze.

The Road Least Traveled

Choosing the road less traveled,
The one that may seem unsure,
Can be a marvelous adventure,
For those who are young and pure.
As time goes along there is danger
Of following after the crowd,
Of being bogged down in the mire,
As destiny cries aloud.
"Don’t stay here you’ll never get going
You’ll be lost amid all this muck,
You’ll soon forget where you’re going
And find you are hopelessly stuck!"
The wise man makes his own pathway,
And prepares for the rainy day,
And never looks back when he finds
His journey makes it’s own way.
There are summits that need to be conquered,
Yes, mountains that have yet to be climbed.
So don’t go the way of the others,
This time the journey is mine!
